The Healthy Fundraising Option

In recent years, there has been a move away from traditional fundraising products (many of which have become perceived as unhealthy or otherwise unsuitable). NZ school boards and PTAs have been looking for healthier options that are still profitable whilst being appealing and easy for students to sell to friends and family.

School Aid was started by Scott and Marilyn Pearson as an alternative to meet that need in New Zealand schools.

School Aid surveyed over 200 schools and asked what they were doing to gain discretionary funds through fundraising. Every school reported that they engaged in some form of fundraising and nearly all had dedicated teams committed to this purpose. Without these funds schools said they would not have the money to provide equipment, camps, trips, etc.

We wanted to find an everyday consumable product with great margin and we chose sticking plasters. Our plan was to build a brand that was easy to sell and of such good quality that families would look forward to the annual school fundraising campaign. The profit from selling these sticking plasters, which would ordinarily go to the supermarket, would instead go to the school; an example would be Girl Guide Biscuits.

By June 2014 we had chosen a manufacturer in China that makes all the Red Cross bandages and dressings. We imported 50,000 samples and launched our first school fundraising campaigns, starting with Gulf Harbour Primary and followed by another eight schools in the North Auckland area. In October 2014 we ordered our first container of what we called Disaster Plasters.

The business model we have chosen enables us to keep costs low. School Aid is setup as a social enterprise with the belief that the business can be commercially sustainable and give all profits to schools.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
School Aid’s fundraising campaigns are modelled on the well-known chocolate drives. Take home method: School Aid provides the school with Packs which contain everything that the kids need to ensure the campaign runs as well as possible. Each fundraising participant takes home a carry pack. They then sell the products and return the money to the school. A designated person at the school checks and collects the money from the children.

OUR PRODUCTS
We now offer two healthy fundraising options for Schools:

1. Disaster Plasters

WHY DISASTER PLASTERS?
Disaster Plasters are an easy to sell, everyday product for fundraising. They are great quality and cost less than leading supermarket plaster brands. 100% of the profit from a fundraising campaign goes directly back to your school.

HOW IT WORKS
Each student is provided with a carry pack of 15 boxes of plasters to sell into their communities. Students can sell as many packs as they like. Money collected from sales is placed into the envelope provided and returned to the school office. Prizes are awarded to students and classes to encourage sales.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOUR SCHOOL?
The individual boxes of 50 Disaster Plasters sell for $5.00 each.
$2.00 from every box sold goes directly back to your school.
That means each pack of 15 boxes sold will return $30.00 to your school.
Many classrooms have raised over $1,000 and some more than $2,000.

2. Reusable Shopping Bags

Responding to demand for more healthy fundraising alternatives, we came up with the idea of Reusable Shopping Bags.

WHY REUSABLE SHOPPING BAGS?
Reusable Shopping Bags are another easy to sell, everyday product for fundraising. They are great quality, colourful and easy to carry around. 100% of the profit from a fundraising campaign goes directly back to your school.

HOW IT WORKS
Each student is provided with a bag containing 10 Reusable Shopping Bags to sell into their communities. Students can sell as many as they like. Money collected from sales is placed into the envelope provided and returned to the school office. Prizes are awarded to students and classes to encourage sales.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOUR SCHOOL?
The individual Reusable Shopping Bags sell for $7.00 each.
$3.00 from every Reusable Shopping Bags sold goes directly back to your school.
That means each bag of 10 Reusable Shopping Bags sold will return $30.00 to your school.
